On October 1th 2016, Center for Turkish Studies will host Zahit Atçıl* under the diskussions theses-articles. Yörük will deliver a speech about “Why Did Süleyman the Magnificent Execute His Son Şehzade Mustafa in 1553?”** based on his thesis.***

In summer of 1553, Süleyman the magnificent left Istanbul with the Ottoman army for his tird campaign in the east against the Safavid known as the Nahçıvan campaign. Before his deperture, he had dispatched an order to the governor of Amasya, Şehzade Mustafa, to prepare his force to join this campaign. En route to Ereğli, Süleyman sent an other Messenger to his son indicating that the latter should join him there, where Süleyman’s forces were scheduled. Despite the warning from within his entourage, particularly those of his mother, Mahidevran, Mustafa decided to join the sultan’s army, telling advisers that hewould not abstain from going “where destiny cast him.” It would not have been easy for Mustafa to decide whether to obey his father’s orders, given that the sultan seemed to be accusing him of rebellion ond of generating sedition.
