“This study aims to examine the OttomanState’s goal to establish a central administration in the Tripoli Province, its direct intervention in the province in 1835 to achieve this goal, and the local resisrance movement that rose against the Ottoman intervention, in particular the uprising of Sheikh Ghuma bin Khalifah.
As an extension of his centrakisation policies, Mahmud II sent a fleet from Istanbul to Tripoli in 1835 and discharged the Karamanlı Family who had been ruling theeregion for more than a century authority further into the region. These governors who tried to expand the central authority further into the region. These governors faced resistance from local power holders, the most resilient one being the uprising of Sheikh Ghuma bin Khalifa who was a strong tribal leader of Jabal al-Gharb district. Although the Ottomans detained and exiled Sheikh Ghuma in 1842, he managed to escape and returned to the Tripoli Province in 1855. After alla uphill struggles with him, Ottoman administrators managed to get him executes in 1858. Thus, no seriouc local resistance took place against the Ottoman central authority in the province from that date forward. My study, based mainly on local and foreign archival sources, sheds a light on and evaluates the events surrounding the Ottoman attempt of establishing a central authority in the Tripoli Province between 1835 and 1858.
