Modern İslamic Thought

Yakub Ahmed

The course shall attempt to examine some of the major themes regarding modern Islamic thought. In recent years a host of new works have attempted to ask new questions regarding Islam, whether that be historical, intellectual or sociological. Debates have centred on language, new theories regarding post-modernity and traditional ideas such as ummah as well as political ideas. This course will attempt to introduce the students to these new subjects by hoping to expose them to the changing direction of academic works regarding the intellectual currents in Islamic studies.

Key topics: Pan-Islamism, Islamism, modernity, the printed press, memory, the Ottoman Caliphate, Islamic constitutionalism, parliamentarianism, the Umma, the Ottoman Empire, Islamaphobia, Islam and the West.
